
Professor Tunde Peto, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Queen’s University Belfast, Clinical Lead of the Northern Ireland Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) Screening Programme, and Specialist in Retinal Ophthalmology.
Professor Peto’s primary scientific interest lies in blinding retinal diseases, with a particular focus on the characterization and imaging of diabetic retinopathy. She has gained international recognition for establishing and leading diabetic retinopathy screening and related training programs.
She is the President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetic Eye Complications (EASDec), a board member of EU-EYE and ECV, and a member of the Global Burden of Disease Eye Epidemiology Group. She is also the founder of the European Eye Epidemiology Group, which brings together 27 epidemiological studies to foster collaboration and create further European research platforms.
In 2021, she participated in compiling the WHO report on Diabetic Retinopathy (Diabetic retinopathy screening in the WHO European Region: current situation).
Recently, she has been recognized as one of the most influential researchers in the UK studying diabetes-related complications.
