
Professor Dr. Edit Tóth-Molnár graduated from the University of Szeged, Faculty of Medicine in 1993. After graduation, she started working in the Department of Ophthalmolgy of the University, where she has been working ever since. She completed the ophthalmology board exam in 1997, defended her PhD thesis in 2001 and received a habilitated doctorate in 2012. Since 2018, she has been the head and full professor of the Department of Ophthalmology. She is the vice president of the Hungarian Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Tóth-Molnár is the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Social Studies of the University of Szeged since 2023.
Her clinical research interests are related to the ocular surface diseases, dry eye, ophthalmic oncology, oculoplastic-, orbit-, and lacrimal drainage system surgery. In the field of ophthalmic oncology, her research has been related on the etiological factors of intraocular pigmented lesions and has resulted in several prestigious publications. In addition, her achievements in the field of electrochemotherapy, which she introduced in the treatment of eyelid-periocular baso-, and planocellular carcinomas are also internationally outstanding.
In the main scope of her basic research interest is the investigation of the duct system of the lacrimal gland and research on tear biomarkers. She established a Lacrimal Gland Translational Research Group 15 years ago. They developed methods for isolation and functional investigation of the duct system of the lacrimal gland. These new methods have made it possible to describe important physiological and pathophysiological processes that are essential for understanding the process of tear production. She has publisheded her results in several publications of high scientific impact.
